Kendo Scoreboard
Web Edition — 剣道スコア表
Record kendo matches on your phone.
Kendo Scoreboard is a web app for recording player names, scoring techniques, penalties and match results. It brings together team and individual match records, league standings and result sharing.
Open it in a browser on iPhone or Android. Add it to your home screen to launch it directly from its icon.
Opens in a new tab. The app interface is in Japanese. This is a personal hobby project; please read the usage notes.
Why I Made It
I wanted something that worked for me, so I made it myself.
Whenever I went to a kendo tournament, I wished I could record scores on my phone, right there at the venue.
I tried existing apps, but I found them difficult to use. All I wanted was to record a match, yet none quite fitted the way I wanted to do it.
In the end, there was only one thing for it: make my own.
That is how Kendo Scoreboard began. I first built an Android app, then created a web edition so it could also be used on iPhone.
It is not an elaborate system. It brings together the things I want to do at a tournament: record a match, check the result and share it with the people who need it.
What It Does
Team and individual match records
Enter tournament, team and player names, then record techniques such as men (メ), kote (コ), do (ド) and tsuki (ツ), along with penalties and walkovers. The first scoring technique is circled.
Choose a 3-, 5- or 7-person team, or set a custom team size from 1 to 30.
Match results and points scored
Use the 集計 (Aggregate) button to calculate results and scoring totals from your entries. Team results compare the number of individual wins first, then the number of points scored if wins are tied.
Review the individual records alongside the overall team result.
League matches
Record leagues with 3 to 5 teams or individual players. Set the league points awarded for a win, draw and loss, and view the standings.
Share and save results
Use the sharing feature to send results through LINE or another available app. Depending on your device and browser, you may instead copy the result text for sharing.
Export and import all records as CSV files, including for backups.
How to Use
- Select team or individual matches and enter the tournament and player names.
- Record scoring techniques and penalties as the match progresses.
- Press 集計 (Aggregate) to check the results, then 保存 (Save).
- Use 共有 (Share) to send results or export a CSV file when needed.
Add to Home Screen
Add the web app to your home screen for quick access at tournaments. These instructions are for the web edition; there is no need to look for it in the App Store or Google Play.
Add the actual Kendo Scoreboard app, not this introduction page. Open it using the link below first.
iPhone — Safari
- Open Kendo Scoreboard in Safari.
- Open Share. Depending on the layout, it may be inside the “…” menu.
- Select Add to Home Screen.
- Enable Open as Web App if the option appears.
- Check the name and tap Add.
The 剣道スコア表 icon will appear on your home screen. Tap it to launch the app next time.
If Add to Home Screen is missing, check Edit Actions at the bottom of the share menu.
Android — Chrome
- Open Kendo Scoreboard in Chrome.
- Open the “⋮” menu at the top right.
- Choose the install or add-to-home-screen option, then Install.
- Follow the confirmation prompts on your device.
The menu may say Add to Home Screen or use similar wording, depending on your device and Chrome version. Launch the app from its icon after adding it.
If you cannot add the app
If you opened the page inside LINE or another app, copy the URL and open it directly in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android.
You can also use the web app in your browser without adding it to your home screen. Menu wording varies with the operating system and browser version.
Notes
Saving and sharing
Records are stored in the device and browser you use. They do not automatically sync to other devices. The sharing feature lets you send selected content to other apps; check who will receive player names and other information before sending it.
Clearing your browser's site data may erase saved records. Export important records as CSV files, and back up your current data before importing a CSV that may overwrite it.
Before using it at a tournament
The first load requires an internet connection. Once offline resources have been saved, the app can also run without a connection. Before relying on it at a venue, check that it launches offline on your own device.
This app assists with match recording. Confirm final results against the referees' decisions and the tournament's procedures.
